Industrial Agglomeration

My Interests:

  • Spatial agglomeration

  • Industrial clusters

  • Tourism clusters

Spatial agglomeration is a phenomenon when industrial sectors or activities are concentrated in space. The forms and drivers of the spatial concentration of activities are of special interest in agglomeration-based industrial planning and policies. When related and supportive sectors in an industry (e.g., tourism) concentrates in space for a period of time, they form an industrial cluster.

It is a basic question in urban planning to organize different sectors properly in space. Theories on industrial agglomeration and clusters provide a conceptual framework for such purposes.

My study of industrial clusters, especially tourism clusters, focuses on analyzing spatial agglomeration using spatial analysis tools, such as ArcGIS, as well as explaining the socioeconomic and geographical drivers with quantitative models and institutional drivers with qualitative approaches.

Identification of industrial agglomeration based on a larger amount of data, e.g., Google maps, is increasingly possible. A long-term vision is to use data mining techniques.

As an initialization, my current interest lies in understanding the agglomeration of the tourism industry in the GBA, and how this knowledge can be used in policy-making and regional planning.
